Termites
Termites are highly developed social creatures, which, in many ways, resembles that of the ants and bees. All species live in colonies which can be as few as several hundred termites in a colony to millions.
In each colony there is a division of labour, with several distinct castes, each specialising in a particular activity. The great majority of termites in Australia live in the soil. In fact, they depend on the soil and its associated moisture content for survival. Those species that live in the soil, are known as subterranean termites, and usually do not attack sound dry wood, preferring damp, damaged timber.
Perhaps the most insidious termites are those called "dry-wood" termites. These species of termites attack sound, seasoned wood that is out of contact with the ground. Dry-wood termites often damage structural timbers in a home and cannot often be detected until much damage has been done. Dry-wood termites are mostly confined to the coastal regions of Australia.
The diet of your average termite consists mostly of cellulose which is derived from living trees, seasoned timber, books grasses and similar sources. It is common for termites to attack untreated wood, and usually by the time their work is visible, the timber is virtually non-existent and eaten away, usually just leaving the veneer of the wood intact.
Subterranean termites gain entry in homes and buildings in a number of ways e.g.
• By constructing mud tubes over concrete stumps
• By tunnelling up the centre pipe of wooden stumps Constructing mud tubes from the soil to the flooring within cavity walls
• Through hairline cracks which appear in concrete slabs around plumbing and electrical conduits.
