European Wasp

The adult European Wasp is considered a pest due to their danger to humans. The European Wasp is identifiable due to its strong "V" marking of its abdomen and its distinctive yellow and black stripes across its body. An adult wasp is capable of stinging several times and such stings can cause serious damage to people who are allergic to wasp venom.

A European Wasp can be identified also by its black antennae which makes up about half the adult body. Its legs are a bright yellow colour, and its wings are clear and fold longitudinally over the body. European Wasps will fly up to 1 kilometre in search for food.

These wasps prefer to nest around human habitation, where there are greater opportunities to scavenge food. Can be found scavenging around homes, picnic areas, school yards and food processing factories.

Nests are normally oval in shape and may range from 50mm to 1m in length. They are covered in a grey, papery wrapping with only an entrance hole visible. Nests are constructed from wood fibre mixed with saliva to form a pulp. They are concealed and may be found below ground level in the soil or above ground level in such places as rockeries, compost heaps, tree trunks, wall cavities of buildings, stacked materials or in old unused sheds. Occurs in New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania and Queensland.

If you notice a good number of these wasps in your area, and/or have found a wasp nest, give RIP Integrated Pest Management Services a call and we can arrange to eradicate the nest of wasps.
